KRANG

Edmonton, Alberta's KRANG is a behemoth of sorts: a monstrous, slithering trainwreck of bass, drums, distortion, stewing in a pit of dehydrated psychedelic stew. The sound of Black Sabbath and Hawkwind filtered through the 90s lo-fi 4-track revolution, with a lunatic noise wizard at the helm steering the spaceship into oblivion. If you took the deformed, inbred brainchild of Wolf Eyes, Guided By Voices, and Sunn0))) you might be getting close to the mutated monstrosity that is KRANG...but even then, you'd be in some distant land, wandering through the desert, tempted by Satan, sucking on some pebble in hopes of pathetically seeing it all through.

"They Came From Planet D" is KRANG's first Cassettes Records offering, recorded live off the floor in an attic somewhere in the frozen winter labyrinth of downtown Edmonton. This is the feeling of being cooped up in a season. "Sometimes," says Parker James Thiessen, assigned to commandeering KRANG's barrage of digital noise and destruction; "when we jam, it's so loud, that I see spots when we're done."

Well if that ain't mean, I don't know what is.

a giant whiskey bird flew above the van as we travelled... we threw everything we could at it to try and catch that thing... empty beer cans, discarded captain nemo undies, ryder's cell phone and wallet, even a piece of c.l.'s finger... it was all for naught though so eamon tried to throw it off our scent by burning his dirty ball hair... that seemed to work and we were running fast but not fast enough as that bird caught up to us a few hours out of saskatoon... i decided to try and bait it w/my middle finger stuck firmly in the air and the silly sucker went for it... we got him and stuffed him in an empty cola bottle and played soccer w/him in the alley behind the venue... touring really is never boring...

the rest is a bit of a blur really... I recall swimming in aids lake, putting something up grandma's nose, 'magic drink', playing music at soul crushing volume, making peace, destroying lives, old friends, new friends... and if anyone ever has the chance to spend Canada Day in the City of Winnipeg I strongly recommend you go for it... those wonderful friendly manitobans sure do...

Drums and bass together on cassette tape and all the afterwards on one hot summer night, two cases of Pilsner, red eyes and a pot of coffee in each cup, stayed up until 7a.m. putting this one together. Snowy and cold punk rock, dirgy and sick pop that sounds like the city of Edmonton in the middle of June. Wet and dry, hot and cold, loud and quiet, somewhere between lying and telling the truth. Traces of Sebadoh, Eric's Trip, Black Flag, the Beatles, Califone, the Germs; somewhere underneath a liar of icy lo-fi slush.

The Cassette reel has been quiet lately. Casse ttes Records isn't done, we just hit the pause button. Expect a self-titled full-length from the Edmonton band Gold Rush out on the Cassettes imprint pretty soon, we're shooting for the end of July. These guys like "Donairs, Lucky Lager, and Neil Young." The recordings on the website aren't the ones we're releasing, these are going to be brand new and drenched in tape, a lo-fi beast.

The Wild Dogs are also trying to release a four-song EP called "Borrowed Amps" that has been in the works for awhile, recorded by Jon Beleshko of Ursa Miner way back when. We're looking at the winter or late fall, when I have some more cash. We might put out a cassette, who knows?

European tour in the works for now, got a show in Germany and one in France. The White Whale tour starts in a week and a half, I'll introduce you to my new band Peacemaker in the next few days when I have some filthy mugshots.

This is the face of a man who has undertaken the rigorous task of booking another tour. We're heading out again in May, again with the City Streets and it's going to be another chaotic whirlwind around North America. I've just got to finish a term of school--also known as "rehab"--before I flood my system again with the "joys" of living below the poverty line.

Easily one of the best live sets I saw in 2008, the Italian Husbands--featuring my good friends Jake Hardy a.k.a. Holzkopf and Trevor Rutley of Gold Rush--tore the roof of the Wunderbar with an improvised Soft Cell cover. The beat is heavier than all hell and Jake's vocals escalate into madness. This sounds like the best death ever. The place had a lump in its throat and choked on the noise. Jake has since moved to Vancouver and this was one of his last Edmonton shows. Here's one from the archives: I just dug up this video of us playing what must be our third show, but it's the first show as the Wild Dogs as they are now. It's definitely Frank's first show with the band. Even though this was probably two years ago we all look fourteen years old and I don't think we all really knew the songs yet. It looks like I've still got my baby fat. Nobody had any idea who the fuck we were. Mark wasn't even in the band, the drummer here is Corin Roddick who left after two more shows or something. This was from a show with Slow Down, Molasses from Saskatoon, who came up to us afterwards and said we reminded them of the Black Lips. Frankie and I were slamming Olympia in the back alley before the show and we played with a post-rock band who booked us thinking it was going to be a folk set because I had only played acoustic shows in Edmonton up until that point.

It seems I've finally run out of road. Back home in Edmonton and ready to face another year. 2008 treated me well more or less but put a good pair of rings around my eyes.

On January 27th at Edmonton's Velvet Underground/Starlite Room I'm playing two country sets with the Whiskey Dogs, an acoustic Dr. Jekyll to the Wild Dogs' Mr. Hyde. We're going to play some Merle songs, some stuff by Gram and the Burritos I'm sure, maybe some Appalachian shit or something.

Then on Friday, February 13th the Wild Dogs will play their first loud Edmonton show in over two months. It's good to be home.

Well that was another round of Toronto. A good dose this time although molly wasn't behaving too well for me if you know what I mean. And we all know how hard it is to have fun without her...

So now it's off to Windsor for a show at the Phog Lounge, and then two nights in the Windy City. Still living on Ichiban and Chunky soup. One more week left in this torrential downpour of touring that 2008 has been and then it's off to a new year.

Made friends with White Whale Records. Look for some good news in 2009.

Toronto is crazy as usual. I hopped on a bill last night at the Annex Wreck Room and it was awesome. Opened for this band with tombstones and strippers onstage. 40 Thieves killed it. Edmonton came out in droves.

I have an apology to make to the City Streets, about the Bear Claw recipe: honey on the rim is always the first choice. Most bars don't have the capability though so you use the shitty sugar substitute.

So much for drying out. In Toronto right now, play at the Silver Dollar tomorrow night with my pals Chris Mullen and Jeremy Finkelstein. I've seen lots of Edmonton ex-pats on the street and hopefully they're all coming to the show.

Tour update with the Thieves: Calgary has a lynch mob out for me now, Regina has a wicked guy named Henry from the band Geronimo, Winnipeg's Sub City Dwellers showed us a wicked weekend and we drove straight across the shield, dodging moose and icy roads for about 23 hours. Thanks for driving the whole way, Caleb. The shows have been good, we played to big crowds in Calgary and Regina and Mr. O'Hanlon is my new hero, he made us a great round of Bear Claws, my new favourite drink. See you in a week or so, wish us luck at the border.

Another month on the road under the belt and another month to go. At one point last month I saw the CN Tower, the Sears tower, the Colorado rockies, the MGM Grand, the Hollywood hills, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Space Needle in the span of seven days. Thanks to the City Streets for letting me take up the room in their van. It still feels weird to sleep in a bed. Thanks to everyone that helped us out along the way and here's to a December of more of the same.

This was a great November.

To be twenty in Montreal is a swift kick in the ass. This city is a beautiful woman with the softest skin and the greenest eyes I've ever seen. Thanks to Chris for putting us up last minute as we trudged the dirt of Mont Royal around his apartment and tried to kick our acid highs. Last night Le Barfly was packed with a crowd of people from all over Canada and we drank and smoked on a balcony that was surrounded by eight brick walls. Mark and Matt and I climbed to the top of a condemned building; 822 Sherbrooke means something to someone and now it means something to me. We pulled up to St Laurent and St Viateur, she smiled, she waved, and said "welcome to the heart." Thank you gorgeous, you are beautiful, and I'll see you again sometime soon.

Last night we played at the Attic in Guelph, Ontario. It was put on by CFRU Music Director Peter Bradley and it was one of the best shows we've ever done. Any touring bands should try and make a stop there: a packed room, sweaty bodies and lots of booze. Scaled the rooftops of Guelph with a beautiful girl. Spray painted the walls.

The tour is going great, we'll see you in three weeks or so.
